The Almanack of Naval Ravikant — p. 42 reading
Original

Seek wealth, not money or status. Wealth is having assets that earn while you sleep. Money is how we transfer time and wealth. Status is your place in the social hierarchy.

Understand that ethical wealth creation is possible. If you secretly despise wealth, it will elude you. Ignore people playing status games. They gain status by attacking people playing wealth creation games.

You're not going to get rich renting out your time. You must own equity — a piece of a business — to gain your financial freedom. You will get rich by giving society what it wants but does not yet know how to get, at scale.

Pick an industry where you can play long-term games with long-term people. All the returns in life, whether in wealth, relationships, or knowledge, come from compound interest.

AI summary

Intelligence isn't the bottleneck. Cost is.

Naval, Garry Tan, and a table of founders on how AI is really evolving — why cost, not raw intelligence, is the real constraint, and what the massive build-out ahead means for jobs and society.

Cost, not capability, is the ceiling

The group agrees that frontier models are already capable enough for most tasks. The binding constraint is inference cost — once that drops another 10–100x, the use cases that seem impractical today become obvious.

The ~90,000x build-out ahead

Naval puts a rough number on how much more compute will be deployed before AI infrastructure reaches saturation — a scale that dwarfs anything built in the cloud era and requires rethinking energy and chip supply chains.

Open source is closing the gap

Open models are now within striking distance of proprietary ones on most benchmarks. This collapses the moat for closed labs and shifts competitive advantage toward distribution and fine-tuned vertical applications.
